Alexander Wang first showed airbrushed tees on his spring 2017 runway and subsequently offered custom versions at shops in New York, Tokyo and London. Now you can purchase five different versions, airbrushed with three phrases, including “Wang squad,” a hashtagged phrase that first appeared as part of an influencer marketing effort rolled out earlier this year.
Wang took some ribbing on social media when the tees appeared on his runway and were dubbed by fashion publications as “exclusive” because the art form came up from the street and is still widely available at street fairs and malls at a fraction of what Wang charges. In fairness to Wang, however, he never tried to claim he originated the trend nor did he say his brand was the only option for purchasing them.
Priced at $125, custom versions are also an option at Alexander Wang stores in Shanghai, Seoul, and Hong Kong November 18-20, and also in Paris at Printemps on December 3rd.
