Princess Nokia releases a visual for “Look Up Kid,” a garage-rock flavored single from her “A Girl Cried Red” mixtape.
Directed by Travis Libin and Nokia aka Destiny Frasqueri, the video shows Nokia backed by a three-piece band performing the song in a spare practice space. The look and feel of the video very much channels the stripped down ethos of ’80s-era hardcore punk movement when the vast majority of bands consisted of the same minimalist line up, consisting of a drummer, bass, guitar and lead singer.
Whether consciously or otherwise, the New York-based Nokia signals the DIY (do it yourself) credo of the punk period when in the video she’s shown receiving impromptu drum and bass lessons.
For what it’s worth, this particular single was a personal favorite from the mixtape and the fact that the video is in perfect step with the sonic vibe only adds to its appeal.
