Rihanna yesterday (August 8, 2018) was announced as slated to receive an Honorary Doctor of Letters award from the University of the West Indies institution located in Cave Hill campus in Barbados, located near Rihanna’s childhood home.
Initially the school announced she would receive the honor at a graduation ceremony slated October 20, 2018 but the school subsequently let it be known Rihanna wouldn’t be able to attend the ceremony this year because of prior commitments.
It’s not clear if the recognition will be moved out a year but sans her attendance the award is null and void.
The kerfuffle over the announcement is especially odd because Rihanna’s team let it be known she couldn’t attend weeks ago. According Barbados News, “This information was communicated to The University of the West Indies several weeks ago and management at The UWI Cave Hill campus, where the award would have been conferred, was aware of Ms. Fenty’s inability to accept the award on this occasion.”
Rihanna is not new to academic recognition. Last year in February, Harvard University recognized her with a humanitarian of the year award.
