Los Angeles-based rapper Doja Cat has revealed she had COVID-19 with the virus causing a “four-day symptom freak out.” In an interview with London-based radio station Capital XTRA that went live on Friday (July 24, 2020), Doja, whose real name is Amala Dlamini, had a remote exchange with show hosts Yinka and Shayna Marie and told them she’s since fully recovered. She added that she thinks she caught the virus from a Postmates delivery.
The 24-year-old Doja is catching some heat because back in March she dismissed reactions to the virus as overblown. On Instagram Live she stated, “I’m going to get corona and them I’m gonna have a corona because I don’t give a f*ck about corona, bitch. It’s a flu!”
At the same time, Doja is still attempting to recover from a mid-May scandal when it was revealed she was partaking in chat rooms known for attracting mostly white males who revel in using derogatory language in discussions about women and minorities. Doja has denied that the chat room she participated in was a gathering places for people promoting white supremacist views.
The controversy also brought back to light a 2015 Doja Cat single titled “Dindu Nuffin,” a title referencing a racist term used to ridicule Black people who are victims of police brutality.
Neither controversy was brought up on the program.
