From her eponymously-named album, Beyoncé’s video titled “Yoncé” pays tribute to George Michael’s super model-filled “Freedom” video by featuring three of the hottest model’s on the landscape: Jourdan Dunn, Chanel Iman and Joan Smalls, who is currently ranked No. 1 on Models top 50 list.
One has to assume the video also is a push by Beyonce to further raise the profile of models of color, whose underrepresentation in fashion has been heavily covered by the press over the past year. As well, there is the sly side benefit of setting up the singer as a beauty worthy of standing side by side with women who receive huge paychecks strictly off their looks. And in the end, it is she who walks the runway, not any of the models. It’s a clear theme departure from “Freedom,” in which Michaels chose not to appear as a statement of his weariness with fame.
