As inspired and glorious as the grocery store backdrop was for Chanel’s ready-to-wear collection for Autumn 2014, it almost was a distraction that took some of the spotlight off of an extremely vibrant collection (though clearly the store theme inspired the fashion and vice versa). And yes, given that this site is rooted in a theme of women’s streetwear, the abundance of sneakers and sneaker-inspired boots was a sort of gimme, but there was so much more than that in terms of the spark and creativity behind not just the shoes, but also the clothes, accessories and of course the bags.
A few years back, Karl Lagerfeld seemed to be stuck in a bit of a rut creatively, turning out gorgeous clothes and bags that were beautifully designed and ever-covetable, but lacked excitement. Now, like a mid-career baseball player whose swing has been given new life via drug enhancement, Lagerfeld–in his case perhaps inspired by the energy of street style, gives us a collection with enough ideas for three runways.
