Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill get cozy in a feature for GQ‘s October 2015 issue featuring images shot by Ellen Von Unwerth, an interview and video. This is the couple’s first meaty interview since Meek’s fall out with Drake that erupted after Mill accused Drake of not writing his own verses, including the ones for “Rico,” featured on Mill’s last album. In the q&a not a lot was said on the beef, except that Meek doesn’t regret his comments and Nicki “may not agree with everything he says.”
Post-beef it’s almost shocking how much hate has poured down on these two, mainly from Drake fans whose noses are out of joint because their hero’s credibility as a rapper has been impacted though there are also the usual comments calling out the relationship as a stunt, too.
Without the distraction of fan fury, Meek and Nick are actually a uniquely awesome couple. One could compare them to Beyonce and Jay Z in terms of background and trajectory, but Nicki’s and Meek both had rougher and tougher upbringings, but the bigger deal is that they’re both winning in the rap game thereby setting a new sort of relationship standard, especially in a genre for which there is practically a cement ceiling for female spitters. While male rappers often have multiple women in their lives, they’re either usually r&b singers or women connected with the entertainment industry. How many male rappers with widely popular status are linked with females at the same level? Current era we can’t think of any.
Nicki’s power levels aren’t lost on Meek who in the article says, “People don’t really have a girlfriend that’s doing more than them or the same thing. I like girls that hustle. She a boss. She’s pretty as fuck. Bad as shit. Ambitious. What else do you want?” Which, dang, how can you not appreciate him for that??
Some other highlights from the article:
Nicki thinks they have a normal relationship: “We’re like any other couple in the hood. Like, if I were to speak to a hundred girls right now about what they go through with their boyfriend, we’d probably have stuff in common.”
Nicki loves kissing Meek: “I love kissing him. I love the way his lips feel.”
They also enjoy good convo, says Nicki: “One of the things that made me want to be with him is we spent so much time talking, and he always made me feel like he was ok with me being me.”
In fact it was a long talk just before Meek went to jail that stole Nicki’s heart: “I remember sitting on my balcony at my house and just being on the phone with him until it started getting dark outside. And I was just like, ‘yo, I’m in trouble.’ I just knew that first day. It was that long conversation. I was like uh-oh.”
