Who better than scrappy, global citizen M.I.A. aka Mathangi Arulpragasam to speak out on behalf of individuals and groups fleeing or expelled from their places of birth. In a self-directed video called “Borders,” the London-born performer questions the existence of borders and what places one groups on opposing sides of often arbitrary lines.
“Borders” will be included on M.I.A.’s forthcoming album Matahdatah. It’s her fifth effort and follows 2013’s Matangi. In July she released the single “Swords,” part of a global-dance themed project called “Matahdatah Scroll 01 Broader Than a Border.” As of now the album doesn’t have a release date.
