Russian artist Asya Kozina is known for her fashion-themed paper creations, including a recent project that examined traditional bridal dress themes from a variety of cultures. For her latest project, she has crafted a collection of wigs, inspired by wigs worn during the Baroque era (1600-1750 in Western Europe). Says the artist:
“Historical wigs always fascinated me, especially the Baroque era. This is art for art’s sake aesthetics for aesthetics, no practical sense. But they are beautiful. I made a series of wigs. Paper helps to highlight in this case the main form and not be obsessed unnecessary details.”
Wigs are adorned with flourishes like flowers and in one case an ancient wood ship complete with sails. Kozina’s artful creations are not rooted permanently in the past of course; similarly fanciful designs featuring hair festooned with every material under the sun have been kept alive in the drag community, as well as fantasy hair competitions often held at hair-themed trade shows.
