Reflecting the same affinity with Asian design themes that showed up in her collaboration with Puma, Rihanna’s latest effort with Stance socks incorporates Japanese art and design themes. As described in press, the collaboration juxtaposes “the beauty and elegance of Japanese culture with the modern street-wear and punk movements.”
In the illustration, Rihanna is shown wearing traditional Japanese clothing and makeup that mimics that of a Geisha, which, if one holds very strict rules around the concept of cultural appropriation, this image is pretty questionable. At Snobette, we are are more of the mindset that as long as the intention is not negative, proper credit is given and no one is erased, appropriate freely!
Thus far the collection includes four ankle styles: Bad Girl, Geisha, Lotus and Marjane, plus a Lotus thigh-high, priced at $16 for the ankle socks and $32 for the thigh-high version.
The collection is now available at stance.com.
