Dave Chappelle provided a much-needed respite from the results of the election, hosting what will surely go down as a legendary episode of Saturday Night Live. The show opened with a performance by SNL cast member Kate McKinnon, dressed as Hillary Clinton, singing “Hallelujah,” a somber statement not just about Clinton’s loss but also the recent passing of Leonard Cohen, who wrote the song.
Following Chappelle’s opening monologue, easily the strongest skit was “Walking Dead Chapelle’s Show,” which brought back to life some of Chappelle’s Show‘s most popular characters. “Election Night,” which included an appearance by Chris Rock, provided a painfully honest look at how badly off liberals were in their assumption Clinton would win the election.
The show ended on a cautionary note with a performance of “We the People” by A Tribe Called Quest, a single featured on the band’s final album We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service.
