For the label’s spring 2017 campaign, Alexander Wang has once again assembled the #wangsquad, a crew of very cool characters, portrayed living a life of fun and excess. There are repeat appearances from last season’s campaign by models Binx Walton, Lexi Boling and longtime fave Anna Ewers, who is basically Wang’s work wife.
Shot by the talented team of Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, the campaign receives fresh rock-star appeal with the addition of Lil Yachty.
Look closely and at first glance you may also think you’re seeing Snoop Dogg and Drake, but nope, those are just imposters meant to toy with the concept of celebrity and our obsession with it.
“It’s about observing and toying with our society’s current obsession with social media,” explained Wang to Vogue. “We wanted to propose both real and fabricated narratives in order to create doubt, whether what you see is real or not, or maybe even something in between. The original spark came from scrolling through my own feed; that feeling that makes you stop or second-guess something. I embrace this obsession just as much as anyone else. The fact that the campaign is only released through social media, but is also a commentary on it, blurs the line even more.”
