Singer and songwriter Gwen Stefani has been announced as the latest global ambassador for Revlon. The singer makes a ton of sense as a face for the brand as she’s always been known for her signature red lip and her love of makeup. She will join a roster that currently includes Ciara, Halle Berry and Olivia Wilde.
In an interview with WWD, Stefani recalled her early days working in a mall at a makeup counter. “I was a makeup artist when I was in my early twenties at the mall, they never trained me,” said Stefani, who added, “I’d be like, ‘Let me put some makeup on you, let me show you what you could look like.”
She also credited the Latina women she attended high school with as an important influence on her makeup choices. “I grew up in Anaheim, California, [which had a] super heavy Hispanic [population], you know, a lot of girls, like Chola girls, that had unbelievable makeup. I would daydream and watch them in class putting their makeup on, as people do when they’re in class, and just be like, mesmerized. That had a huge influence on me,” said Stefani. [Side note: Stefani may not know this, but use of the world Chola to describe a fashion aesthetic is considered offensive by many.]
Stefani recently toured in support of her album, This Is What The Truth Feels Like, though she’s not clear what her next move in music will be. “I don’t know if I’m going to do new music, I’m definitely at the end of a chapter. I did the tour, I know I’m doing ‘The Voice,’ I’m doing the stuff in my fashion, but I have some dreams inside me and I know that I have some stuff brewing so we’ll see.”
In terms of her fashion label, Lamb, Stefani said for now she will focus on spot projects, like her ongoing collaborations with Burton, though she’s also mulling another collection, “I definitely am working on a potential ready-to-wear collaboration, but it’s a little early to be talking about it.”
