Known for her sexy, sultry persona, Jhené Aiko has added another, more intense layer to her personality with her new video, “Maniac.” Set in a hospital for the mentally ill, the visual expresses love as a condition capable of making one lose one’s mind.
Directed by Aiko, the songstress put in some time researching the history of mental institutions and the extreme practices used over the course of history to treat patients.
Explaining the song, Jhené told Rolling Stone, “There are so many layers to my personality. One of them is very sexual and ‘Maniac’ is me sharing that side of myself. When I started putting together the concept for the visual, I wanted to explore what it meant to be a maniac.”
First released in November 2016, “Maniac” will be a part of her as of yet untitled sophomore album.
