As part of her return to Instagram, Kim Kardashian over the past week posted a series of images showing herself, Kanye West and their two children going about their business is what appeared to be a very spare home with none of the normal high-end trappings we’re used to seeing associated with the couple.
Subsequently, the two were criticized and memed on social media for slumming and attempting to portray themselves as something they are not.
As revealed by TMZ, the images were shot at the Malibu home/studio of Rick Rubin, who offered West the spot as a low-key place to recover after he checked out of the hospital. TMZ’s source said West stayed at the home on and off for a few weeks and Kim and the kids also spent some time there. The spot is not a new one for West, who is known to have recorded there.
A couple years ago, Zane Lowe provided a tour of Rubin’s Malibu home where his Shangri La studio is located and you can watch it below and see that the background in Kim and Kanye’s images match up with the location, which is known for its minimal design aesthetic.
All that said, the images still appear to be art-directed by West, who is very much into a blurry photo aesthetic as of late.
