The pre-midnight guest for ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ New Year in New York’s Times Square, singer Mariah Carey put a fitting cap on an off kilter, mess of a year with a performance upended (according to Carey though disputed by ABC) by sound issues that marred her ability to hear the backing tracks for her songs. “Well Happy New Year. We can’t hear, but I’ll just get through the motions,” said Carey at the beginning of her second song, “Emotions.”
Carey made no effort to pretend she was singing live, lip syncing only occasionally into the mic and at times talking over the backing track, announcing the various and sundry sound issues and encouraging the audience to sing along in her place.
For what it’s worth, the songstress looked great, wearing a crystal-beaded beige bodysuit with a white feather boa. And given the the crowd and the location, there’s a good bet most of the people in attendance didn’t even notice all the issues.
Carey stayed unbothered following the performance, and wrote in an Instagram post, “Shit happens 😩 Have a happy and healthy new year everybody!🎉 Here’s to making more headlines in 2017 😂”
