Almost a year after its release, the impact of Beyoncé‘s black-girl anthem “Formation,” from her sixth studio album, Lemonade continues to reverberate.
Marvel Comics is the latest to get in formation, showing Latina queer super hero America Chavez on the cover of issue No. 2 of the “America” series, wearing a costume inspired by imagery from the visually-striking “Formation” video.
Chavez wears a look based on Queen Bee’s black dress and over-sized top hat costume, with modifications coming in the the form of a stars-and-stripes top and Uncle Sam-shaped top hat. Chavez is flanked on the cover by Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau, otherwise known as Captain Marvel and Spectrum.
Illustrated by Joe Quinones and written by Gabby Rivera, Chavez was first introduced in 2010 and landed her very own series last year. Her superpowers include strength, speed, the ability to punch holes in space-time.
Look for issue No. 2 to land on shelves in April.
