Supreme taps into its artsy roots with an M.C. Escher capsule that includes two t-shirts and one long-sleeve t-shirt. According to @dropsbyjay, there are additional items that have yet to be revealed.
The Dutch-born M.C. Escher, aka Maurits Cornelis Escher, is best know for his woodcuts, lithographs and mezzotints that explore geometric and architectural concepts. Escher was born in 1898 and passed away at the age of 73.
The black, long-sleeve t-shirt includes a work titled “Eye,” the white t-shirt features “Three Spheres,” and a third, baby blue t-shirt contains six works of art: “Hand with Reflecting Sphere,” “Relativity,” “Ascending and Descending,” “Plane Filling Motif with Birds,” “Bond of Union” and “Mobius Strip II.”
In commenting on one of his most popular pieces of work, “Ascending and Descending,” Escher revealed an existentialist side to his personality that today’s youth would probably appreciate. “That staircase is a rather sad, pessimistic subject, as well as being very profound and absurd. With similar questions on his lips, our own Albert Camus has just smashed into a tree in his friend’s car and killed himself. An absurd death, which had rather an effect on me. Yes, yes, we climb up and up, we imagine we are ascending; every step is about 10 inches high, terribly tiring, and where does it all get us? Nowhere,” wrote Escher in a letter to a friend.
If you’d like to see more of Escher’s work, his estate’s website is here. For more background on the artist himself and how he was perceived, check out this article by The Guardian.
There is no drop date yet for this collection. Jay says the t-shirts will be $44 and the long-sleeve one will be $48.
