Somali American model Halima Aden has laded the cover of Vogue Arabia‘s June 2017 issue, a feat that makes her the first to wear a hajib on the cover of a Vogue magazine. Photographed by Greg Kadel, the 19-year old was shot wearing designs by Dior, Max Mara (whose fall 2017 runway she walked earlier this year), Norma Kamali, among others.
While it’s significant that Vogue has placed Adenwearing a hajib on its cover, she let the magazine know back in April that she is more than the garments she wears. “When I’m walking the runway I want people to see that, yes, I’m wearing a hijab, but I’m also a million other things. I want us to get to a place where we just see women,” she explained.
While Aden had her first brush with fame through her participation in a Minnesota beauty contest, her big crossover to fashion came when Kanye West tapped her to walk his fall 2017 Yeezy Season 5 presentation in September 2016.
