In the same vein of Charlie Murphy’s tale of playing basketball with Prince, in a partially-animated Vice video, South African Die Atwoord member Ninja described a sometimes bizarre story of playing basketball with Kanye West and Drake.
The story had its roots in 2015 when Die Antwoord was touring Australia with Drake, and a huge controversy was created when a meme that read “I’m a massive faggot” was posted on band emcee Yolandi Visser’s Instagram account. The caption, “Fuk. Drake was kak,” wasn’t nearly as horrible as the image, but was still pretty bad considering they were on tour together.
In the interview, Ninja admitted he posted the image in response to seeing Drake perform. Whoever actually posted it, the offending post caused Sony to drop Die Antwoord from the tour’s promotions and caused lots of awkward moments whenever they crossed paths with Drake and his crew.
After the tour ended, Ninja received a somewhat random invitation to West’s house, a connection that was made through Paris Hilton. The meeting included porn, vanilla pudding and an invitation to Drake house next door to play basketball.
Upon arrival at Drake’s house, Ninja was surprised and somewhat disappointed to discover that Drake and his crew chose to act like nothing ever happened between them. “This is the problem with rap music today,” Ninaj says. “No one fucking said anything to me. No one hit me. I mean, that’s ridiculous”
The basketball game was also a trip and included plenty of odd moments. One thing is clear, Ninja is NOT a fan of Drake and though he admires West’s music, he chose in the end to keep his distance.
