Thus far, the roll out of Kanye West‘s Yeezy Season 5 collection is feeling more organized than any season prior. First there was the drama-free presentation held during NYFW and now, right on schedule, is a full lookbook of fall 2017 clothing, accessories and footwear.
While the clothes have been presented, it’s not clear how the collection will be sold at retail. While Adidas Originals has consistently produced West’s Yeezy sneaker line, he’s gone back and forth on including him in on the production and distribution of Yeezy fashion line.
This time, however, the line includes items with Adidas branding so perhaps it will be a combination of his own yeezysupply.com store and Adidas Consortium accounts.
Production and distribution aside, there is a lot to love in this collection, combining as it does of-the-moment relaxed unisex fits with quiet branding flourishes that identify the items as designed by West.
It doesn’t take a genius to predict that the items that will do best are the ones featuring branding or phrasing that references West, whether the tops printed with Calabasas and “lost hills” or the ones featuring a small feather crest, though the most-sought-after item will no doubt be the Adidas-branded crewneck with scribble graphics.
Depending on pricing, a lot of items in this collection while on point from a trend perspective may not be viewed as worth the price given the widespread availability of similar and much-lower priced options available at an array of retailers. (And it’s a certainty that as we speak, fast fashion retailers are pouring through these looks and plotting how to best reproduce it.)
And judging from the pile up of unsold $300 + plain cotton hoodies on yeezysupply.com, this is a problem West has no choice but to address. As is often the case, sometimes the easiest solution is following the credo of less being more.
