The story of famed shoe designer Manoloh Blahnik is being told in a Michael Roberts-directed documentary titled “Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards.” Releasing in New York on September 15, 2017, the film includes interviews with Blahnik (who is far more quirky than one would imagine), plus longtime friends and admirers André Leon Talley, Anna Wintour, Rihanna, David Bailey, John Galliano, Naomi Campbell and Paloma Picasso.
Born and raised on Spain’s Canary Islands, Blahnik learned how to design from his mother who made her own shoes, learning the craft from a local cobbler. In a testament to his designs, Wintour in the preview clip points out that she wears Blahnik’s shoes exclusively.
