Alexander Wang and handbag designer Judith Leiber have announced plans for a collaborative evening bag. Both New York designers, Wang is known for his downtown appeal while Leiber’s crystal-covered minaudières are more likely to be found sported in hand at a posh uptown event.
The two designers found common ground with a bag that marries Wang’s street-informed aesthetic with Leiber’s love of novelty silhouettes through a bag that mimics a very thick roll of $100 bills. Featuring more than 10,263 black, gunmetal, green and clear Swarovski crystals, just like a real money roll, it comes with an actual rubber band and a chain strap.
The designer told WWD that part of the appeal is Leiber’s top-notch reputation, but also his label’s push to do more red carpet dressing. “Within the last year and a half, we’ve been pushing a lot more evening capsules in our pre-collections,” Wang said. “One of the gowns that we’ve done for three seasons now has been consistently one of the top sellers in our entire line, so we know there’s a customer for it.”
The bag will be introduced on Wang’s spring 2018 runway presentation on September 9, 2017 during New York Fashion Week.
Priced at $4,995, only 20 bags total will be available to purchase at the Alexander Wang New York and London stores, Saks Fifth Avenue and alexanderwang.com in November.
