Among the four designers shown on Fashion East’s group runway during London Fashion week, once again London designer A Sai Ta of Asai’s presentation popped out. Anchored on textured and fringe silk fabrics as well as sculpted wovens and paired with jewelry offerings from Joanne T., the collection (highlighted by an extremely fun pair of open toe, over-the-knee porcelain dragon boots), just clicked and felt fresh and influential.
In an interview with Dazed, the London-based designer, whose resume includes working with Kanye West on Yeezy Season 2, said the collection was themed on slowing down and taking in the scenery. “We live in such a fast-paced, easily-distracted, materialistic world, that we pay very little attention to the actual materiality of the things we own, explained Asai. “So this season is about giving attention to the materiality of the everyday garments. Elevated street pieces in fabrications that alter the forms. Luxury is the ability to wear something fucked up ’cos you can afford to look this way. Showing your fragility is the confidence. Less is less and more is definitely more! [It’s about] finding the calm in the chaos!”
From the intricate jewelry collaboration with designer Joanne T. to intricate silks and fringes, Asai’s spring 2018 requires a closer look to discover artful details and a diverse cast of models that include diversity of skin tone but also height.
