RCA recording artist Leikeli47 dropped her 14-song Wash & Set album today (September 8, 2017), a project accompanied by the release of a visual for “MILK” a song celebrating her partnership with Milk Makeup, an innovative cosmetics brand rooted in the boundary-pushing spirit of Milk Studios.
Referencing vernacular used by African American women to describe time getting one’s hair did in a salon, Wash & Set is very much an ode to black women and at times through phrasing and attitude specifically the ones who occupy Leikeli’s home borough, Brooklyn.
Ranging from the menacing tone of O.M.C. to the sultry flow of “Ho” to the bouncy sound of “Attitude” and the dancehall vibe of “Bubblegum,” Leikeli47’s flow stays immaculate throughout and is beautifully backed by an array of beats and mixes that range from the light and airy to dark and hardcore.
Pound for pound, there really isn’t another rap artist bringing it with as much unique verve, talent and top to bottom consistency as Leikeli. Would she be much, much bigger if she were a male? One can’t help but wonder.
Shot by Nikko Lamere for Wash & Set’s cover, Leikeli is wearing Calvin Luo and Yajun, as styled by Snobette’s Samia.
