Check out the trailer for Love Beats Rhymes, a RZA-directed film starring Azealia Banks, who plays the role of Coco Ford, a 25-year old rapper from Brooklyn pursuing a career. The film also stars Common as her mentor, Lorraine Toussaint, Jill Scott, Lucien Laviscount, MC Jin and Hana Mae Lee.
The film was first announced in 2015 with Coco as the working title. In June 2016, RZA told Rolling Stone the movie was finished though at the time he didn’t know when the studio would release it.
In October 2016, RZA and Banks had a major falling out over a hotel fracas involving Russell Crowe and Banks that RZA witnessed.
Given some of the ugly exchanges between the two (Banks called RZA a chump, among other insults), one would guess the movie was officially doomed, but a wish to recoup dollars save the day and the film will be in select theaters, on digital and on demand December 1, 2017. It will be available on DVD on January 2nd.
