With her relationship with Robert Pattison now in her past, FKA Twigs aka Tahliah Debrett Barnett moves forward with a new zine, titled AVANTGarden.
Titled “Roots, Shock, Beauty,” the first issues is a celebration of the art of braiding black hair. The issue made its debut on Twig’s Instagram account and is also available to view at fkatwi.gs/avantgarden. With plans to publish about once a month, future issues will explore an array of topics, which could potentially include music.
The day before issue No. 1 went live, Twigs wrote about her motivation for the first issue on Twitter. “Tomorrow i will share a little something i made to show my appreciation for braids with you i hope that you feel it,” she wrote. “It started off as something fun but became a self explorative artistic expression, it made me think about and question my relationship with my exterior shell in a way that made me want to create more and connect with you on this subject.”
In an interview with Dazed, Twigs explained her relationship with her hair has been a journey. “As a mixed race person, I have a very complicated relationship with my hair,” she explained. “For people of color, hair texture is such a big conversation. I’ve heard horrific stories of girls going into school with braids and teachers telling them to take them out, or even cutting girl’s braids out in the classroom.”
