Rihanna‘s days as a SoHo/Chinatown resident appear to be drawing to an end. As of now her rented duplex penthouse is on the block priced at a cool $16.9 million. Purchased by French fashion photographer Antoine Verglas for 6.1 million in 2005, Rihanna has been renting the spacious space since 2013. Initially priced at $39,000 a month, four years later, she’s now shelling out $50,000 a month.
Located at 129 Lafayette on the 11th and 12th floors of the building, the four-bedroom, three-bath, 4,660-square space includes a wraparound terrace, 13-foot ceilings, a wood-burning stove and a chef’s kitchen. Allegedly, three of the four bedrooms have been converted into walk-in closets. We imagine one each for clothes, shoes and accessories!
This is the catch, should Rihanna decide to stay, the apartment will come off the market so nothing is final just yet.
There’s been a lot of chatter about why Rihanna may be moving, including a street entry that makes it impossible for her to avoid camped out paparazzi. As well, the building was accessed in May 2017 by a stalker, the same one who was able to enter the building in 2014.
There’s also speculation that London has become her primary residency thanks to her relationship with beau Hassan Jameel and therefore it no longer makes sense for her to spend as much money on a space in Manhattan.
That said, because her management team, Roc Nation, is based in New York, no doubt she will always have a place in the City so perhaps she’s ready to purchase her own place, just not the one she’s currently residing in.
While Rihanna rents in New York, she owns a six-bedroom $6.5 million house in the Hollywood Hills, which she purchased in August 2017. She also owns a $22 million mansion in Barbados located in the One Sandy Lane luxury resort.
While there are images of the apartment via the agency selling it, they are not images of the apartment as decorated by Rihanna. From time to time, the Bajan singer will post images shot from the interior (most infamously the “yas bitch” twerk moment from after the 2014 CFDA Award event) though she tends to keep professional photographers out of her homes.
