Kylie Jenner continues to expand her Kylie Cosmetics line, announcing plans for a range of foundations, offered in 30 different shades from “fair to deep dark.” The foundations are part of her new Silver Series, which also includes 30 skin concealer shades, brushes and 17 bullet lipsticks, all of which is marked by silver packaging.
In response to the range, Jenner is receiving a ton of social media pushing back, accusing her of copying the idea of a wide range of foundation shades from Rihanna.
Reflecting typical commentary, makeup artist @theeonlyociera, wrote on Twitter, “If Fenty Beauty didn’t drop a few months ago, the darkest shade would have been warm tan. Recognize your icons and what they do for you.”

Her tweet received a ton of co-signs though there were some who pointed out brands like Lancôme, NARS and Make Up Forever for many years have provided a wide array of foundation shades and have also featured women of color in ad campaigns. Some people also pointed out that Jenner probably started developing her foundation line well before Fenty Beauty launched.
All that said, while Fenty may not be doing anything first, her own unique star power combined with her enthusiastic embrace of inclusivity is unprecedented. The models she used to front her campaign and the makeup artists she tapped to test her product took celebration of young women of all shades to new heights, and for certain her approach turned heads.
This is the thing, there is only one Rihanna and her unique appeal and ability to influence purchases cannot be reproduced and it’s a huge part of why Fenty Cosmetics was so successful.
Kyle also has unique appeal and ability to influence, but as it relates to foundation offered in a wide range of shades, at least for now Rihanna has ownership of the narrative and any brand attempting to enter the space whether it intends to or not looks like a follower.
