Puma has linked up with British-born and New York-based artist Shantell Martin for a 20-piece shoe and apparel collection. The collection is underpinned by graphics referencing the minimalist black and white scribbled typography Martin is known for.
“It was cool being able to apply my artistic DNA to iconic Puma silhouettes,” Martin told Refinery29. “But what I particularly loved about the project was hiding little messages throughout the product offering to make something truly unique.”
Born in East London, Martin grew up in Thamesmead estate public housing complex in London where she first began to draw the stick figures still present in her work today. A Central Saint Martins graduate, Martin spent time in Japan where she began to experiment with live performance art.
When Martin moved to New York in 2008, she focused her efforts on her physical art and had her first solo exhibit in at Black and White Gallery in Brooklyn in 2012. Prior to Puma, Martin has worked with Kendrick Lamar, Max Mara and Lexus. To kick off 2018, she launched a vlog series, documenting a day in her life as an artist.
Puma and Shantell Martin’s collection will drop on February 10, 2018 on puma.com.
