In advance of her Grammy performance, SZA chatted with GQ magazine about “Supermodel,” a single on her album CTRL. In the exchange SZA said the song started simple, became more complicated but eventually returned to its spare roots.
“I was writing about this particular boy. I really liked him. He was low key trash to me, but I really liked his like validation, but he also sucked. It just takes me through all our shenanigans. It was the silliest relationship I’ve ever been in but it was also fun as hell.” said SZA, describing the lyrics.
When it came time to choose songs for the album together, SZA said she received push back but she stuck with her instincts and knew the song was special.
SZA will perform at the Grammy Awards where she is nominated in five categories: best new artist, best r&b performance, best rap/sung performance, best r&b song and best urban contemporary album.
