New York designer Marc Jacobs delivered a fall 2018 collection oozing of retro opulence in silhouette, color and texture. Showing strong shoulders and jewel-colored coats, Jacobs took us on on a journey of big and bold statements described by the designer as mostly inspired by French great Yves Saint Laurent, who’s always been Jacobs’ most prominent inspiration. At the same time, offerings tapped into the dramatic runway statements Thierry Mugler and Claude Montana were famous for making.
In commenting on the collection, Jacobs expressed a wish to create a runway-rooted collection. “No street-inspired clothes here,” Jacobs told WWD about the offerings. “Jewel tones. Sumptuous fabrics. Eye makeup and nail polish that match. Incredible hats by Stephen Jones. Accessorized from the top of the head to the bottom of the foot. These are runway clothes. I don’t know what happens afterward, but they’re runway clothes. That’s what I do. That’s what I’m doing.I’m very happy doing it, by the way. I love doing this.”
Ballsy and bold, Marc Jacobs fall 2018 collection is as much about Jacob’s skill as a designer as it is his confidence in walking to the beat of his own drum.
