Announced earlier this year Rick Owens and Birkenstock’s collaborative footwear collection is about to hit retail. Consisting of an Arizona sandal, Boston clog and the single-strap Madrid sandal, the shoes are offered in cowhide, felt, suede and full-grain leather material stories.
The 14 pair collection also includes a coordinated capsule of cozy socks as well as an apparel collection to be sold exclusively at the Box, a mobile shop that will be parked in front of Owens’ La Brea Avenue boutique in Los Angeles from April 17- 21, 2018.
Reflecting on the capsule, Owens told the Los Angeles Times, “I thought, well, you know, I could put sequins on them. I could make them in cordovan leather or alligator or something, but I thought it would be more profound to actually alter their shape. So I extended the straps because when I first started doing clothes, my women’s day dresses had trains and things were trailing, and things were falling off and so that’s kind of what I did with [the] Birkenstocks. I made the straps a little too long and when things are a little bit too much to me, there’s a subtle note of extravagance and impracticality. So to be able to do that to something that’s very practical like a Birkenstock was what made our collaboration make sense.”
Priced from 55 euros for socks up to 355 euros for the Boston clogs, the shoes and socks are now available for pre-order online at rickowens.eu with an official launch date of April 17th.
