Jada Pinkett Smith has been creating buzz as of late with a new Facebook-sponsored show titled “Red Table Talk,” described as candid conversations with Pinkett and family and friends.
In the latest episode Pinkett Smith discovers at the start of the program that a hair stylist she was close to has passed away from brain cancer. When Pinkett Smith asked her daughter, Willow Smith, what her biggest lost was, she revealed she came close to losing her mind during the period after she released “Whip my Hair” in 2010.
Smith explained, “I was in this grey area of like, ‘Who am I?’ Is there anything like that I could do beside this. After the tour and the promotion, and all of that, they wanted me to finish my album, and I was like…’No, I’m not gonna do that.’ And after all that settled down and it was a kind of lull, I was listening to a lot of…dark music. I was plunged into this black hole and I was cutting myself…yeah and doing crazy things.”
Pinkett Smith responded with shock and admitted she didn’t know. When asked if either of her brothers knew, Willow said only a single friend knew her secret.
When asked by Pinkett Smith why she was cutting, Smith explained, “I was experiencing so much emotional pain, but my physical circumstances weren’t reflecting that.”
She added that she stopped cutting at the age of 12 when she realized the behavior was psychotic. “I just stopped, it’s been like five years.”
Afterwards, Pinkett Smith discussed losing Tupac Shakur and admitted a lot of her emotions connected to his loss were rooted in anger. “I feel that he left me and I know that’s not true and it’s a selfish way to think about it, but I really did believe he was gonna be here for the long run. I get made at god, I get mad at him. I get mad at everybody,” she said.
She also discussed losing herself because of her role as a wife and a mother.
