New York-based Princess Nokia drops a video for “For the Night,” a visual directed by Milah Libin and Nokia aka Destiny Frasqueri.
A song that addresses her attraction to touring as well the fallout from her life on the road, the video blends clips of Nokia performing with various shots of her alone in a dark lit hotel lobby and room.
The single is from “A Girl Cried Red,” a mixtape that examines the genre of emo music, a fresh interpretation as seen through the lens of a woman of color whose musical upbringing was deeply informed by ’90s New York underground music culture.
Addressing the response to the project on Instagram, Nokia wrote, “People of color love this album so much and i am so happy about that. funny that the only people that seem to have a problem with it are older white men.. please keep reviewing it and giving it half assed recognition. I LOVE to see my brown body take space in rock music and make you feel uncomfortable.”
Please tell me how much my album sucks so I can laugh in your face at how ground breaking it is to have a women like myself shatter your interpretation and normality of alternative music and culture.. you can continue to reduce my genius and artistic creativity. It doesn’t change my value or the history I continue to make”
“A Girl Cried Red” in red vinyl or casette is now available for pre-order on roughtraderecords.com.
