Met Gala host Rihanna was very much on theme for the event’s Catholic-referencing “Heavenly Bodies” gala last night (May 7, 2018), wearing an ornate, white beaded Maison Margiela corset dress under a fall skirt.
The ensemble was designed by John Galliano for Maison Margiela and included a beaded Catholic papal tiara (worn by popes from the medieval era through the ’60s according to the NY Times) by Stephen Jones. Her shoes were by Christian Louboutin and she carried a clutch by the dearly-departed Judith Leiber with jewels by Cartier, Kentshire and XIV Karats.
The decision to with Galliano was almost as big a statement as the dress, providing the Catholic-born designer with not just a huge platform but a very Catholic-feeling moment of redemption following his exile from Dior in 2011 after he was arrested for making anti-Semitic remarks at a Paris café.
Rihanna also hosted her own after-party at Up & Down on Houston Street. Arriving at 3:00 AM, she wore an easy breezy silver lurex pantsuit with ruffle details.
