Italian luxury label Dolce & Gabbana continues to feud with Diet Prada, an Instagram page themed on calling out labels for copying design ideas. In the latest swipe, D&G has created a t-shirt that’s a direct copy of a t-shirt Diet Prada owners Tony Liu and Lindsey Schuyler had created to make fun of D&G designer Steffano Gabbano.
For some back story, the contentious relationship between the two labels began in October 2017 when Diet Prada accused Dolce & Gabbana of creating a set for a photoshoot that mimicked the look and feel of Gucci and Gucci Ghosts design efforts together.
Never one to hold his tongue, Dolce & Gabbana designer Stefano Gabbana saw the post and responded in a since deleted comment that read, “We made all this world in the ‘90 so, if you are ignorante is much better for you don’t say anythyng about this image… Gucci copy us in many different way!!! This is one of… please say sorry to me!!” To this day, the comment section still includes Gabbana calling Diet Prada idiots.
A few months passed, and Diet Prada reignited (literally) the feud by setting fire to a Dolce & Gabbanna label, an action made all the more dramatic thanks to the use of Beyoncé’s “6 Inch” as background music.
Not content to let it go, Diet Prada then created a shirt featuring the Gabbana phrase “Please say sorry to me.” Priced at $32 (and now sold out), a portion of sales were donated to Nest Egg Foundation, a non-profit organization helping individuals struggling with infertility.
The donation was another swipe in Dolce & Gabbana designer Domenico Dolce, who told an Italian publication in 2015 he was opposed to in-vitro fertilization. “I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalog,” said Dolce, according to a NY Times article.
Nine months later you’d guess the petty fest would be over and done with and you would be wrong. Lo and behold, Dolce & Gabbana grabbed the torch, taking Diet Prada’s sorry t-shirt idea and turning it into their own. Price at $481, the shirt is now available at farfetch.com. Naturally, Diet Prada covered the copycat t-shirt with a post.
Dolce and Gabbana love a good war of words, while Diet Prada clearly lives for drama and not much else. The two combined are not unlike the married couple that bickers constantly and yet endure, leaving outside observers to conclude they’re not only suited as a couple but deserve each other.
