Nike has joined forces with Off-White’s Virgil Abloh and Dior Hommes’ Kim Jones to create a capsule honoring the beautiful game, better known as football to most of the world and soccer to Americans.
Titled “Football, Mon Amour,” the Off-White looks are comprised of a jacket, jerseys, goalkeeper glovesand a FlyKnit Zoom Fly sneaker, all of which riff off of the splashy logos and graphics soccer jerseys are known for. Reflecting his own history with the sport, the numbers all reference ones he wore during his playing years.
“The great thing about the vocabulary and history of football is that aesthetically it has its own look. I was always inspired by the way European teams have a sponsor printed over the chest. When I was working on this collection, I wanted to celebrate the different variants of typography,” said Abloh in Nike press.
With a collection titled “Football Reimagined,” Jones chose to focus on the silhouettes themselves, making use of Italian tailors to create a soccer jacket, jersey and shorts remade vis-a-vis the lens of the punk era. Jones’ capsule also includes a Flyknit Zoom Fly sneaker, a hybrid shoe that combines elements of Nike’s Footscape, Vandal and Air Max 97 silhouettes.
“That whole punk era was all about proportions that gave power to the wearer. I was inspired by the idea of DIY of the time, cutting up and putting things back together, to create something new,” said Jones.
The Nike and Kim Jones “Football Reimagined” collection launches June 7 on nike.com and at select retail locations globally. The Nike and Off-White collection launches June 14th on nike.com and at select retail locations globally.
