Harlem singer/rapper Azealia Banks announced last night on Instagram stories she’s cancelling Fantasea II: The Second Wave, the follow up album to her mixtape of the same name.
Banks had told Ebro Darden on his Beats 1 program in April 2018 she hoped to drop the album in the summer, specifically in July 2018, in sync with the project’s mermaid theme. Two tracks from Fantasea have been released thus far: “Anna Wintour” in April 2018 and and “Treasure Island” in July 2018.
Banks’ decision to cancel the album followed a trip to Atlanta where she taped an episode of Nick Cannon’s “Wild ‘n Out” program.
Banks said she attended the show to perform “Anna Wintour,” but then was corralled into participating in the roast segment and was attacked for her appearance. On Instagram, Banks wrote, “I show up and some guy who’s darker than me starts calling me ugly and being colorist, then all of a sudden a choir of the most disgustingly basic, local, cattle call ‘urban’ pseudo comedic ‘FAT BECause You sit in a chair all day’ greasy soul food induced south of the mason Dixon ,self hatred,” she added. “Ass It#backwards, post-Jim crow , post traumatic slave disorder true self esteem less, Ward of the state CLOWNS with their low scale and highly UNimpressive resumes, start going off about how the beautiful Azealia Banks looks! I’ve never felt so much hate and rage for anyone else than I did in that moment. Yemaya was really on stage.”
Cannon responded on Instagram, where he wrote, “Don’t you hate when you create your own storms but forget your umbrella??? ♂ @azealiabanks We are praying for you Queen #speedyrecovery #Healing
She #Wildnout for real #Karma.”
In addition to the Instagram post, Banks wrote and spoke at length about the experience on Instagram stories. As is her way, she also responded on Instagram to commenters both criticizing and supporting her.
