Donald Glover and Rihanna were spotted in August 2018 in Cuba where it appeared they were working on a film project. Now a bootleg trailer of the effort has emerged, one that was previewed at Glover’s PHAROS festival held in Aukland, New Zealand November 24-25, 2018.
In the clip, Glover and Rihanna are lovers, whose relationship is strained by consuming work schedules and a lack of money. Things go south when Glover is kidnapped by masked men and Rihanna is drawn into the hunt to find him.
The project is directed by Hiro Murai, who is known for directing quite a few “Atlanta” episodes, as well as Glover’s “This Is America” and “Sober” music videos. The credits also list actresses Letitia Wright and Nonso Anozi.
There is some debate about whether the project is a film or a long-form music video connected with the launch of Glover’s upcoming album. While identified as “Guava Island” when it was being filmed in Cuba, the title isn’t referenced in the trailer. In the credits, the project is identified as it as a “Childish Gambino film,” which informs the argument that it may be a music video a la Beyoncé’s Lemonade rather than a stand-alone film.
Glover has announced the use of Childish Gambino will end with his upcoming album and “This Is America” tour. Below are the final dates for his tour, some of which were rescheduled after Glover was forced to cancel dates due to a foot injury he sustained in September 2018.
