Following Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer’s Tuesday (December 11, 2018) West Wing meeting with Donald Trump in which the president was dunked on repeatedly and made to look like a dummy (yet again), much was made of the burnt orange coat Pelosi wore while making brief comments following the event.
Internet sleuths immediately set to find out the maker of her fetching, funnel neck coat. First it was uncovered she had worn it to Barack Obama’s 2013 presidential inauguration . It was also noted that it was likely chosen by Pelosi’s husband, who she has credited as her unofficial stylist.
Meanwhile, back in San Francisco, the city Pelosi represents, the coat literally became larger than life when someone projected an image of Pelosi striding away from a White House up in flames (a la “CSI: Miami”) onto the Federal House.
Initially the coat was thought to be a very similar one made by Carolina Herrera, but the NY Times with its friends in high places was able to identify it as a Max Mara design. For good measure, the paper of record noted the sunglasses she wore were Armani and her pumps were Stuart Weitzman.
On the celebrated coat, Max Mara wrote on Instagram: “Max Mara is honored that U.S. House Representative @nancypelosi wore the #MaxMaraFireCoat to her historic meeting at the White House. A #MaxMara coat is a year on year companion, designed to last a lifetime. This boule shaped, funnel collar coat represents lasting values and projects both personal strength and glamour.”
According to coverage by Glamour, a Max Mara spokesperson has confirmed there’s a plan to bring back the celebrated coat sometime in 2019.
