Nicki Minaj and Drake as of Thursday (December 6, 2018) are no longer following each other on Instagram. There is some debate about whether Drake unfollowed Minaj or she blocked him.
Some have pointed to Drake’s renewed friendship with Minaj’s ex, Meek Mill as causing the fall out, though given their history it’s more likely to be related to Drake’s support of Minaj’s music or lack thereof because they no longer share a label.
Rewinding back to friendlier times, Minaj, Drake and Lil Wayne in February 2017 very publicly reunited, a moment that came about after a period of frostiness between Minaj and Drake thought to be caused by her relationship with Mill. The trio followed up with “No Frauds,” a track Minaj used to respond to Remy Ma’s “shETHER” diss track.
However, just one year and a few months later when Drake dropped Scorpian, he let it be known with “Is There More” lyrics he was done with his deal with Young Money/Cash Money. While Minaj was featured on the album, in the business-never-personal world of music, Drake leaving Cash Money in the taillights would also mean he no longer felt any obligation to either Lil Wayne or Minaj.
And indeed, Drake didn’t promote Minaj’s album Queen when it dropped on August 10th. Her last Instagram post referencing Drake is dated August 2nd, a playful video with Drake ribbing her about “Fefe,” her single with Tekashi 6ix9ine. At the time there was speculation the post was hinting at a Drake feature on Queen, but it never materialized. In an interview with DJ Whoo Kid, she revealed Drake was initially slated to be on the album but it didn’t work out because she would have had to delay the album further and chose not to do that.
Minaj has hinted Drake was less than happy with his call out on “Barbie Dreams” though in retrospect perhaps her jabs at Drake were more Roman-rooted than the playful pokes she claimed they were when the song dropped.
As to what specifically caused yesterday’s rupture, Drake’s new “friendship” with Meek isn’t the likely culprit because Championships, which includes their song “Going Bad” dropped on November 30th. If anything, Minaj might tell all in her next episode of “Queen Radio,” but she hasn’t provided timing on her next episode and there’s a good bet by then their differences may be history.
