Ypsilanti, Michigan-born r&b and soul singer Queen Naija née Queen Naija Bull is the latest focus of YouTube’s artist documentary series with video titled “A Way Out,” a 15-minute examination of the artist directed by Kanyessa McMahon.
The video examines her first break as a contestant on “American Idol,” followed by pregnancy and marriage at the age of 19. Queen and her then husband, Christopher Sails, were going through a period of hard knocks when the couple came up with the idea of starting a YouTube channel documenting their lives.
Now re-married to Clarence White and pregnant with her second child, Queen is signed to Capital Music and in July 2018, achieved the No. 1 slot on Billboard’s “Emerging Artist” chart in July 2018. On our own 2018 round up of top 25 singles by women, Queen landed the No. 15 spot with her single “Medicine.”
The documentary also includes cameos by producer Dion “No I.D.” Wilson, who also serves as the an executive vice president of Capital Music, along with Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s head of global music.
