Fresh off her acting debut in Netlfix film Roma, Yalitza Aparicio lands Vogue Mexico’s January 2019 cover. She’s wearing a Dior dress and was photographed by Santiago and Mauricio.
Aparicio was born in Tlaxiaco, Mexico, where she was studying to become a pre-school teacher. As encouraged by her sister, she responded to and landed the part in an open casting for the role of Cleo in Roma, an Alfonso Cuarón-directed film.
In the film, Cleo speaks Mixtec, an indigenous Mexican language Aparicio was taught by Nancy Garcia, who plays the role of Adela in the movie.
“It was a challenge, because I do not speak it,” Aparicio told Vogue Mexico. “My father did but we did not learn it because he was afraid that we would be discriminated against for not being able to speak Spanish well.”
Roma is available on Netflix as of December 14, 2018.
