While they weren’t present at the event, Beyoncé and Jay-Z used a video to thank the BRIT Awards for awarding them the best international group as The Carters at the event in London last night (February 20, 2019). In the video, the power couple is standing in front of a painting, a scene similar to the one included their “APESHIT” video, a single from their “Everything Is Love” album. This time however, rather than a portrait of “Mona Lisa” in the Louvre, the painting is a portrait of Meghan Markle who’s formerly referred to as Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
The caption reads: “Thank you to the Brits for the award for Best International Group. I won this award back in 2002 with my besties, Kelly and Michelle. How lucky am I to have been in a group with my other best friend, the GOAT Hova. 🙌🏾”
The couple revealed the reason for including a portrait of Markle with a statement congratulating her on her pregnancy that reads: “In honor of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas. Congrats on your pregnancy! We wish you so much joy.”
Markle is thought to be six-months pregnant with a due date some time in April.
Painted by Tim O’Brien last year, the Brooklyn-based painter was caught by surprise by the video. In an interview with Baazar, O’Brien explained the origin of the portrait, “I was hired by two great creative directors, Erin Mayes and Kate Collins out of Austin, to paint the cover of The Key, the magazine for the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. This was a collaboration and we worked together closely on the image and all the tiny details specific to the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.”
