Harlem designer Dapper Dan ne Daniel Day today (February 15, 2019) responded to rapper T.I.’s “Fuck Nigga” diss song taking aim at boxer Floyd Mayweather for wearing Gucci. On Instagram, Day pointed out that at the least Mayweather stayed loyal to him when his tailoring business was at rock bottom.
In a post on Instagram, Day wrote, “When the brands took everything from me and I was sewing in a basement, @floydmayweather was there. When artists couldn’t afford to buy #DapperDan clothes, I would give them credit, and then y’all got famous and y’all never came back. I’m not going to call y’all out, but I’ll give y’all the opportunity to speak up.”
In an Instagram post responding to a Gucci balaclava top detailed with oversized red lips view as inspired by blackface, T.I. ne Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. last week called for a three-month boycott of Gucci. Not long after he made the call, Mayweather was spotted with his crew in a Gucci store in Beverly Hills by TMZ. In an exchange asking him about the boycott, Mayweather stated, “I’m not no follower, I do what the fuck I wanna do,”
Long before the Gucci controversy, T.I. and Mayweather have had a rocky relationship that some say is rooted in Mayweather’s overly friendly relationship with T.I.’s wife, Tameka Dianne “Tiny” Harris.
Prior to T.I.’s call for a boycott, Day responded to the Gucci top with news he was planning to meet with Gucci’s CEO to hold him accountable for the top.
In his post thanking Mayweather, Day also thanked Shawn Carter, who he credited with exposing him to a new generation. Day wrote, “This new journey for me started with #JayZ (@aintnojigga); Thank you brother for doing that #LifeAndTimes feature on me, which led to #KelefaSanneh’s 2013 “Harlem Chic” cover story in @newyorkermag.”
He also thanked Black Twitter, Wu Tang Clan, Sean Combs, and stylists Monica Morrow, Marni Senofante, June Ambrose and Misa Hylton. He added, “Shortly after that, #BlackTwitter exploded. Black Twitter is why I reached where I am today. And I want to give a special thanks to @wutangclan, because they told their stylist @monicamorrow to “find Dapper Dan” because they wanted me to do their clothes. And thanks to you too @diddy for sending @marnixmarni, @juneambrose, and @misahylton to the basement for clothes also!”
