Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover is set to drop “Guava Island” a music-themed video featuring Rihanna that was shot by frequent “Atlanta” director Hiro Murai. The 55-minute visual officially will screen following his headlining performance at Coachella tonight (April 12, 2019).
When the launch date for the project became solidified last week, Robyn Fenty fans in particular have been holding out hope the video would include new music by their fave, who has left the Navy parched as they await for the arrival of her ninth studio album. Her last recording? A feature on N.E.R.D.’s “Lemon” dropped in November 2017.
The bad news is that Rihanna isn’t featured on any of the film’s songs, which are described by the NY Times as containing “restaged and remixed” version of some of Glover’s recent songs.
However, Rihanna does play a starring role in the film as Kofi, the love interest of Deni, a musician who’s played by Glover. In the film, singer Deni promises Kofi he can write a song as alluring as she is, and true to her confident real life persona, she scoffs at the claim, telling him, “No song is that beautiful.”
At the same time Kofi is attempting to organize a music festival though the movie’s bad guy, Red (Nonso Anozie), is doing his best to undermine his efforts because he doesn’t want his workers to skip out of their factory jobs to attend the event.
The film will be available to watch on Amazon Prime at 12:01 AM PST on April 13th. It will also be streamed on Twitch at 5:00 PM PST on April 13th and will be simulcast on Coachella’s YouTube channel.
