Nike and Tom Sachs continue to create dope things under their collaborative NIKECraft banner. An extension of the Mars Yard Overshoe boot, the designer has revealed additional NIKECraft Transition items including an exploding poncho along with a set of quilted shorts.
The poncho was first conceptualized in 2014 with a design project led by Nike senior design director Jarrett Reynolds, who was interested in creating, according to Nike press, “a quick-deploy poncho that pulled swiftly from its carry and could be easily repacked after use.”
When Reynolds hit multiple roadblocks, he reached out to Sachs for help, planting the seeds for the project to designed under the NIKECraft umbrella.
The poncho and accompanying waistbag were manufactured in Vietman, a location Sachs chose because of the level of skill expressed by a company based there. Sachs explained, “The factory we worked with in Vietnam is, really, one the best makers that I’ve worked with at Nike. They didn’t just blindly do what they were told. And that’s a true measure of a real collaboration.”
The NIKECraft Transitions poncho and shorts will launch on April 27, 2019 in Japan to coincide with Sachs’ “Tea Ceremony” exhibition at Tokyo Opera Gallery. A global release will follow.
