Cali-based rapper Ruby Ibarra has partnered with The Balikbayans for a live rendition of her track “Someday,” an effort done as a submission for NPR’s famed “Tiny Desk” music series. The track is from her album
Circa91, released in October 2017.
Born in the Philippines and raised in California from the age of four, Ibarra spoke to Asian Journal about her early love for hip hop music and finding her creative purpose through rap and the spoken work.
Ibarra explained, “I find it important more than ever to use my platform to share my voice because I can provide that sense of identity for someone else, just like how I felt as a little five-year-old girl listening to Lauryn Hill. If I could give, even just one percent of that feeling that Lauryn gave me to someone else, then I feel like I’ve accomplished what I’ve wanted to do with my art.”
