Charismatic model Slick Woods (real name Simone Thompson) adds another bullet to her resume with her acting debut in Goldie, a film directed by Dutch director Sam de Jong.
The film’s script is very much inspired by Woods’ own tumultuous rise to fame, which includes losing her mother to the prison system at the age of four when she was arrested for manslaughter. Woods’ mother was released from prison earlier this year after serving a 17-year sentence.
Premiered at Berlinale in Berlin in February 2019, the film features Woods in the role of 18-year-old Goldie, a dancer living in a shelter in the Bronx with her mother and two sisters. Her world is turned upside down when her mother is imprisoned and she’s tasked with caring for her two younger sisters while still trying to live out her dreams.
In an interview with WWD, the 22-year-old, who last fall gave birth to a baby boy immediately following a runway appearance for Fenty x Savage, mused on her unlikely rise. Said Woods, “I mean acting, modeling, everything, it’s very secondhand to me. I’m a gang banger, a drug dealer. I never knew that I was going to be in the presence of Sam [de Jong]. You know what I’m saying? I always thought I was going to be a drug dealer and a gang banger. Like that’s what it is. But Sam and [casting director] Damian [Bao] changed my perspective of things and now I’m straight-laced and a square. It’s cool. They saw things that I definitely didn’t even have. I didn’t deserve. I respect them a lot for bringing me to that perspective because I definitely quit like 48 times in the movie.”
The film is currently showing as part of New York’s Tribeca Film Festival, which wraps up on May 4th. Tickets are available to purchase at tribecafilm.com .
